In June 2017, the World Wide Fund for Nature in Zambia (WWF Zambia) will mobilise a group of influential Zambians and media to undertake a 63-kilometer walk to raise awareness of the sustainable water stewardship and call for better care and preservation of the water.
The Journey of Water campaign was announced on Wednesday, 10th May 2017 in Lusaka at a breakfast launch graced by minister of Water, Sanitation & Environmental Protection Hon. Lloyd Kaziya and ministry permanent secretary Dr bishop Edward Chomba among other stakeholders.
Water covers 70 per cent of our planet’s surface but only 3 per cent of all water on Earth is freshwater and furthermore, only a meager 1 per cent of this is accessible for human use. Despite its significance and scarcity, it is perhaps one of the most underappreciated resources.
The campaign is aimed at reconnecting people to the real source of water – nature; reminding us that ‘water does not come from a tap’. This year’s campaign will focus on the Kafue flats; highlighting the route water takes from Kafue to Lusaka. It will culminate into a literal walk through the Lower Kafue sub catchment, from Kafue town all the way to Lusaka.
The JoW campaign is premised on the fact that water wastage and lack of concern for the commodity are very critical even when 4.8 million Zambians were still without access to clean water.
From the launch to the actual walk, WWF Zambia will work with the media various local celebrities to raise awareness on water conservation.
Celebrated Zambian female boxing sensation Catherine Phiri who along with other stars attended cocktail launch of 'Journey of Water' pledged  her fame and hard work to the cause.
"I have really a learned a lot this evening, I now appreciate the importance of water and will spread the message about the importance to care for it," pledged the former WBC female bantam weight champions.
Catherine is not the only star on board, Dancehall singer Petersen Zagaze, comedian Kabova, celebrated civil society activist William Chilufya, successful entrepreneurs Sipho Phiri and Mubita Nawa, legendary song bird Maureen Lupo Lilanda and popular television talk show host Innocent Kalaluka aka Smooth IK were amongst the local stars that turned out to nod the campaign.
