The Sustainable Luangwa Project aims to secure Luangwa’s water resources for shared socioeconomic and environmental benefits through integrated catchment management. This 5-year, $2.9 Million USD Global Environment Facility (GEF) initiative is led by the Government of the Republic of Zambia through the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment in collaboration with WWF Zambia as the implementing agent.
Location of Project Site
The project scope is the Luangwa Upper Sub-catchment, concentrated in Mafinga District, in Muchinga province. The Luangwa River originates in the Mafinga Hills of the Luangwa-Malawi watershed in the north-eastern part of Zambia and flows over a stretch of 850 km to the confluence with the Zambezi River in Luangwa District. Within Mafinga District, the project will focus on the source of the Luangwa River, given the importance of the upper catchment to the long-term water flow and quality of the Luangwa River and associated stream ecosystems and ecosystem services. The Mafinga Hills National Forest Reserve (MHNFR) and the surrounding areas in Mafinga, Musipizi and Ntonga Wards of Mafinga District are part of the project area.
