The Kafue Flats were identified as an internationally important Ramsar wetland due to the biodiversity that this complex habitat supports
The Kafue Flats fishery is of national importance with an estimated value of US$30 million.annum-1. The Flats account for between 15% and 22% of the total Zambian fish harvest. The contribution of the fishery to food security has previously been acknowledged, but its importance as a source of income to many actors in the Kafue Flats and further afield has been underestimated. This fishery contributes significantly to the regional economy and requires intervention to ensure its long-term viability
