The Living Planet Report 2024

The nations of the world have set ambitious global goals for a thriving, sustainable future, including halting and reversing biodiversity loss under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), capping global temperature rise to 1.5°C under the Paris Agreement, and eradicating poverty while ensuring human well-being through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, despite these aspirations, national commitments and actions on the ground remain far below what is needed to meet the targets for 2030. As we stand on the brink of critical tipping points, the reality is stark:

  • More than half of the SDG targets for 2030 will be missed, with 30% worsening compared to 2015 baselines.
  • National climate commitments are set to lead to an average global temperature rise of almost 3°C by the end of the century, risking irreversible catastrophic tipping points.
  • National biodiversity strategies and action plans fall short, lacking both the financial backing and institutional support necessary for success.

The Living Planet Report 2024 explores these challenges in-depth, providing crucial insights into the current state of our planet and the urgent action needed to turn the tide.
