The Zambezi Watercourse Commission (ZAMCOM), the Kavango Zambezi Trans Frontier Conservation Area Secretariat (KAZA TFCA), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) view the preparation of the Cuando Basin Integrated Water Resources Management Plan (IWRMP) as an illustration of the practical application of the principles of IWRM at a transboundary level. It demonstrates the commitment of the governments of the four riparian states of the Cuando Basin, namely the Republic of Angola, the Republic of Botswana, the Republic of Namibia, and the Republic of Zambia, towards the sustainable management, cooperation, and effective governance of water and other natural resources in the region. The Cuando Basin Integrated Water Resources Management Plan presents the aspirations and plans of the riparian countries for the Cuando River Basin, summarized in the form of a ten-year plan, which has an estimated cost for the first five years. This plan is the first for this river basin, which is one of the 13 sub-basins of the Zambezi Watercourse. The Cuando River Basin provides various goods and services supporting biodiversity, the people, and the economies of the riparian countries. While the basin is still relatively pristine, there are increasing pressures due to various factors including climate change and unsustainable use of natural resources, which have put its pristine status under threat.
