Arnold Chasaya

2019 Intern

Meet Arnold.

Arnold Chasaya has a Bachelor’s Degree in Media and Communications, with a minor in Development Studies from the University of Zambia. He loves visiting new places and one of his hobbies is film making. He loves photography and making films because he believes that through both, stories are told that can change the world.
Arnold joined WWF as a Communications Intern under the Zambia Youth for Conservation, Agriculture and Livelihood Action (ZYCALA) project.

We asked him about what inspires him, why he joined WWF and how he would like to be part of changing the word. Read his responses below.

Who do you look to for inspiration?

I look up to myself for inspiration, as strange as that sounds - because I believe that people have different aspirations and drivers. When it comes to life, I believe you are the best inspiration for yourself. By looking up to yourself, you are less likely to error. Everyone is unique in their own way.

What motivated you to join WWF?

There is something special about the Panda, it draws you. As a Communications person, I love participatory development. What interested me the most is how WWF maximizes on its community participation. I love to use my communication skills to give communities a voice so that they can influence the direction of development, I felt that WWF would be the best platform for this.

What environmental issue would you like to be part of addressing?

Deforestation. I am saddened that there is seemingly no law that discourages land developers from cutting down trees. I wish that each developer, be it private or commercial, would be compelled to look after the trees on the land they are developing. This way, efforts to combat climate change would be better. We need to provide a form of obligatory piece of legislation, for every contractor to take responsibility for the vegetation found, as part of their application to develop an area.

What excites you the most about this Internship?

I am in close interaction with communities. People that are feeling the effects of climate change, and those that play a critical role in the fight against climate change. I am able to give them a voice.

In my work, I also get to interact with people from diverse cultures and see how communities participate in various development initiatives. I really enjoy it.

What role can your generation play in making the world a better place?

Wow, there are so many. I would say that the most important one is voluntary work. We should be open to work for no pay, to make a contribution and enhance our skills. We need to make a generous contribution to the growth of our universe.
